All about Sabudana(Tapioca pearls) & baby food recipe

Today, I am going to discuss some easy peasy baby food recipes made from sabudana(tapioca pearl). This is one of the baby food recipe that u might not find in a any western site but here in India we all know about its benefits. Some of the health conscious people in India daily eat it,mixing with moong dal and daliya to make a kichdi for breakfast.

Sabudana is always considered as a fasting food.Tapioca is one of the purest forms of starch food . Due to its purity, it is one of the favorite staple food during fasting in India but it makes a good food for babies too.

Sabudana in India is made from tapioca roots of cassava plant and is often confused with sago.As both sago palm and tapioca roots are used to get the starchy pearls.

Can we give sabudana to babies?

Sabudana is pure starch, low in protein ,fat and any other nutrient.this is why it is not considered very nutritious alone. Its more of a weight gaining food(mostly have carbohydrate)and regulate motions and prevent constipation also.

People in our country start giving sabudan ka pani(sabudana soup) to babies after six month.I suggest to discuss with ur doc before introducing it as he knows best abt ur baby's health.

Before jumping to recipes ,I want to add that on surfing thru net i found that many people are advocating that starch shud not be given to babies as they can't digest it,but in that case we have to ditch all infant cereals, rice, potato ,sweet potato and all but after reading a post on Science of Mom,i am got my answer.

I wud say don't give it daily and give in small quantity or u can start it after eight or nine month.or one can ask their paed too before introducing

It's been quite too much of information but i always think its good to share whatever information i have, esp when it is concerned with our little ones food.

now here are some food recipes with sabaudana for babies month wise

For a six month old baby -
Babies are first introduced with sabudana ka paani(sabudana soup) at this age.
nothing much to do,just soak handful of sabudana in double water quantity .but before that rinse sabudana pearls few times.

leave it for 2 or 3 hr.Transfer it to a sauce pan, cover with a lid.

well am cooking in a frying pan(don't ask why?)

Let it cook, till the pearls changes from opaque to translucent.

as u cook ,pearls get translucent and sticky

remove from flame, strain liquidy soup and give it to baby directly or can add lil formula or BM to it.

For a 7 to 8 month old baby-
Once baby is used to some lumps .there is no need to strain the liquid, add little formula or BM to cooked sabudana and a simple porridge is ready.

if u want to make sabudana porridge a little sweet ,soak some raisins overnight ,raisin will swell and its liquid gets little sweeter, why not add this to sabudana  but keep in mind the quantity.
apple puree or mashed banana can also be added to porridge to give it li'l sweetness.

For a nine month to 1yr old baby-
we will make Sabudana kichdi,It is a great breakfast for u and ur cutie pie.Really easy recipe and I can guess most of u know it ,see how I made it for my Jn.

Ingredients-sabudana(tapioca pearls) half cup
                 1 chopped potato
a pinch of jeera (cumin seeds)
                 a pinch of haldi(turmeric powder),dhaniya(coriander),cumin powder

  • Step 1- Rinse sabudana pearls few times(this is imp, didn't knew abt it before)Normally it is made by soaking sabudana overnight and then draining water. But I soaked it for 2 hr only, didn't drain water, cooked it in its water in a sauce pan separately.cook till it gets soft and translucent.I want the sticky and mushy one,so that my baby can gulp it down easily.
cooked sabudana in a sauce pan separately

  • Step 2 - In a frying pan, pour lil ghee or oil, saute with zeera(cumin) and hing(asfoetida) (i add hing to every food I cook for my lo)..add chopped potatoes .cover it with a lid,let it cook till potatoes get tender.

  • Step 3- Now add pinch of haldi (turmureic) powder ,dhaniya (coriander) powder and zeera (cumin) powder to it,stir it for few minutes and finally add cooked sabudana.the yummy sabudana kichdi is ready for baby.

Alas! it doesn't seem as yummy to us(quite addicted to salt and spice),so after taking out some part for baby why not add little salt, chopped chillies and roasted peanuts to it(my fav thing) and garnish it with coriander leaves and give urself a nice treat also, enjoy it with ur baby

wow! what a healthy breakfast(though my pic sucks)My hubby quite liked it.definitely going to make it again.

For toddlers-
we will make sabudana kheer with whole cream milk.

Again an easy peasy recipe.
  • repeat step one above ,cook sabudana till translucent in a saucepan.
  • now add pinch of cardamon powder,
  • add sugar according to ur baby's taste(not urs)  and,
  • then add full cream milk according to consistency ur baby likes.

and a delicious sabudana porridge(sabudana kheer) is ready for baby.
Thank God, my choosy toddler likes it,and I am satisfied that its good for her tummy.

will discuss some more baby food recipes, till then

  1. Hi preity, I have one more method of making sabudana khichadi. can try that as well. Soak sabudana for 2-3 hrs and drain the water through strainer. Sprinkle water over it and lleave i covered for another 4-5 hrs. Then add roasted peanut powder, jeera powder and a little aamchoor (dry mango Powder). salt to taste and a pinch of sugar wil add extra taste. then temper as per r recipe and trust me it will turn awesome. I love having this with curd. The great part is my daughter thinks it is a junk food and so i can pack this in her tiffin instead of maggi or pasta.
